Chapter 19

“I’m just glad that you’re sticking around this time, Ma. I know it’s been your dream to travel the world, but we all missed having you here.”

“I know you did, Garrett. I know that all of you did, and I’m grateful that you were all so supportive in my travels,” Cora Thatcher said. “But with the new baby on the way, I think it’s important that I remain home to see Logan and Frankie through this time.”

“Yeah, she seems to be having a rough time of it. Maybe because she’s missing her own family,” Garrett suggested.

“I’ve thought about that, too. Any time that I try to bring Frankie’s parents up in conversation, though, it only serves to upset her more. So, I just leave it alone,” Cora said.

“Family is important. It is the most valuable lesson I have learned since coming to the states,” Marcello said.

The three of them were relaxing in the living room, waiting for everyone to return home so they could have supper. Cora had finished cooking fifteen minutes earlier, and Garrett had come in an hour earlier from working and had since showered.

“I agree,” Garrett said.

“When I thought I had lost my daughter, I was miserable. Although I was determined not to let it get me down, when I had the love of a good American woman at my side,” Marcello said, grinning and squeezing his arm tighter around Cora’s shoulders as he pressed a kiss to her forehead.

Garrett was glad that his mother had once again found love. And he was thankful that Marcello was a good man, despite the misgivings he and his brothers originally had about their relationship. If anyone deserved to be happy, it was Cora Thatcher.

His mother had been through a lifetime of storms and remained strong through them all. She had loved hard and taught her boys how to love harder.

“I think that maybe you should call her parents up and have a conversation with them, Cora. Maybe it isn’t up to the child to mend… how do you say, ‘broken fences?’ Especially when she was not the one to break them in the first place. From everything you have told me, Frankie is a good girl, and it is her parents that were in the wrong. But maybe if you have a conversation with them, they can be persuaded to see things your way, no?”

“I don’t know, Marcello,” Cora hedged. “She’s adamant about not wanting to reach out to them.”

“It is okay if she does not do it. But if you have a conversation with them, maybe, just maybe, they might change their minds and their hearts. They might pick up the phone and call her, which I think would be a great thing for her. She will see they are serious, and she might be persuaded to forgive them. After all, this is their first grandchild, no?”

“Yes, it is,” Cora confirmed.

“I am sure that they would want to be a part of the child’s life. I am excited about the birth of this little one.
