Kirk kicked the metal bucket by the barn door. It hit one of the hens pecking about, and she clucked like wild before settling in a corner. He didn’t care about the chicken. He was too angry, too hurt.

How could she have kept such a thing from him? He’d thought she might care about him. He’d thought that, maybe, they could fall in love and become a family. How could he be married to a prostitute?

“God, what are you doing?” he shouted towards the ceiling. No answer. “If this is a lesson, I think I can do without it.”

Finally, he moved to sit on a bale of hay. The scent of the barn was familiar, comforting. Finally, his anger faded until all that remained was hurt. He felt like someone had shot him in the stomach. The worst thing of all - the lying, the secrets - was that he had cared for her. He’d wanted to love her, to spend his life with her. What did he have now?

That night, for the first time in months, Josiephine made herself small in her bed. She curled into a ball, burying her face in her pillow. She let sobs overtake her as every hope she’d had for the future vanished.

Oh, how she wished she could hate Kirk for his anger. She wanted to curse his name for his lack of understanding.

Instead, she understood him. She felt his hurt over her deceit, his anger at hearing the truth from a stranger. In spite of her own pain, she couldn’t deny Kirk’s right to his. How could she blame him? What would she have done in his place?

Worst of all, she still cared for him. Even though she knew he’d turn her away, she wanted to find him, to comfort him. She wanted to hold his hand and tell him everything would be fine. It was an odd thing, to care about someone after she’d earned his hatred.

It was also unavoidable. Josiephine was certain, as she buried her cries in her tear-dampened pillow, that care was not the appropriate word for her feelings. Even so, she refused to place a stronger word on them. It was too late for that now.

She’d cry through the night, she knew, but tomorrow, she would stand tall as she could and attempt to show strength. Of course, that all depended on if her brokenness was obvious or not. People always seemed to see her weakness. The problem was, nobody had ever shared it with her, not even her mother. Josiephine’s heart ached, for her mother, for Kirk, for herself. Even so, she slept.
