Tanner held his head, letting it droop over the railing of the horse’s stall, yet gripping it because he felt as if it spun so quickly it might take off flying across the ranch. A myriad of emotions fought within him: anger, love, fear, and hope. The mixture left him reeling out of control.

He knew it the moment he had scanned the email on Joy’s computer, the tipping block that would take Caden, and her, away from him. His abruptness that his Grandma had scolded him on may have been rude, but the choked words he had held back would have had her praying for his soul.

Better to hold it in check until he could escape to where no one judged him, where he couldn’t hurt anyone.

His words had already got him in a heap of trouble, already taken Caden away without him even knowing he had him to lose, and they had kept Joy away for the last four years and kept her from telling him the truth now.

One moment he wanted to lay into her, grasp her shoulders and demand she tell him the complete truth. He wanted to tie her to the house, not let her leave, resentment or not. In the next moment, he wanted to drop to his knees, beg her to give him another chance and plead that she not take Caden or herself away.

He never knew which one would win, so he clamped his lips, sucked down the words, and worked. That’s what he did best.

With that reasoning, he pulled his head up and set to task on oiling the harness to keep it supple in the freezing temperatures. The barn’s air held the sweet tang of horse and hay, a combination that always calmed his nerves, and the small heater they kept going to keep the horses warm on the frigid nights helped ease his joints.

There was always work to be done on the ranch. He usually kept busy except for mealtimes and when he was too exhausted to do anything but sleep. It had been the only way he’d made it through the last four years.

If she left now…anger boiled up within him. If she left now, he feared not even exhaustion could keep the pain of loss away.

Didn’t he have some rights? How could she take his son away from him, no matter how much she lied about Caden being his?

That thought, as always, thrummed within him. Joy had always been honest, upfront, gentle, and kind. Had he hurt her so much that it changed her entire personality?

The thought that he had caused such a horrid change made him angrier still.

He bunched the harness in his hands, feeling the hard leather bite into his flesh, using the pain to keep him from exploding. The soft crunch of icy snow stopped his heart. He released the harness and shook out his hands, blowing out deep breaths to calm the rage that fired inside him.

“Yes, I know, saying goodnight is important, but
