When Gracie got home, her elation must have shown because her sister took one look at her and burst into tears. ‘You found a job, didn’t you?’

‘Yes.’ She tried to tell Jane about it, but all her sister could do was worry about what Tommy would say, and weep because they were going to be separated again.

That upset Gracie, too, but not as much as the thought of staying near Bert did. He had such a stubborn look to him.

She hugged Jane. ‘I’ll come back and visit you regularly.’

‘It won’t be the same as living nearby.’

‘No, dear. But at least we’re in the same country now. Can’t you take comfort from that?’

‘I’ll hardly ever see you. Please stay with us and look for a day job nearby.’

‘I’ve given my word now. If I break it the agency won’t find me anything else.’ She went to finish repacking her trunk, feeling both guilty and relieved.

Tommy said a great deal that evening, tossing words like ‘ungrateful’ and ‘taking advantage’ at his sister-in-law as he chomped his way through an overloaded plate.

While the two women were washing the dishes, Jane begged her once again to reconsider.

This upset Gracie but she still refused. Apart from anything else, Tommy was starting to get on her nerves. She couldn’t understand why Jane loved him.

And they were both so thrilled at the thought of having a baby that when Tommy wasn’t talking about Bert, he was talking about his son, quite sure it was going to be a boy.

Gracie couldn’t help hoping it would be a girl.

She was glad when it was bedtime and she could escape the chilly atmosphere and angry remarks from Tommy.

But she found it hard to sleep, tossing and turning in the narrow, creaking bed. She was more than a bit nervous about going to live over a hundred miles away from the only people she knew in Western Australia.

And she would miss Jane, of course she would.
