Tilly turned the volume up on her phone to drown out the roar of the vacuum. She normally listened to audiobooks or podcasts when she did chores around the house, but that morning she wanted upbeat, loud music. She’d turned on an 80s playlist and slipped on her headphones. As she pushed the vacuum across the thick rug in the den, her mind wandered to the night before with Dean. Did he feel that? We did almost kiss, right?

After stewing on it all night, she’d doubted herself. Maybe I just read into it and that didn’t really happen. But then she thought about the feel of his thumb stroking the top of her hand. It was amazing how such a small touch could melt her bones. She remembered the way his brown eyes had darkened with desire when he looked at her, the way his hip brushed against hers … She wasn’t the type of woman handsome men went around wantonly kissing. She laughed to herself at the thought. But could I be? Could I be that woman?

She thought about the new wardrobe she’d bought with Sarah and Gen as she bent down to detach the nozzle of the vacuum hose to clean the baseboards. I want Dean to want me. Is that so bad?

She finished her chores quickly, then texted Gen and Sarah to see if they would be up for a quick brunch at The Moonlight Cafe. To her relief, they both quickly responded yes. Sarah said she would pick up Gen and meet her there in an hour. Tilly quickly showered, then stared at her closet. What does a fashionable woman wear to brunch? She thought about an outfit that Sarah or Gen might wear and ended up pulling out white jeans, brown sandals, and a royal blue casual top. She picked up one of the long silver necklaces that Sarah had talked her into buying and added that to the outfit. Satisfied that this would work, she dressed then put on a light application of makeup and perfume. When she walked out of her bedroom, there was no sign of Dean. Once outside, she noticed that his SUV was gone. He must be out trying to exorcise his writing ghosts.

She drove into town, and her spirits lifted as she saw her friends walking into the cafe. She quickly parked, then joined them inside. As she sat down in the booth, Sarah eyed her suspiciously.

“What?”

Sarah frowned. “First off, excellent choice with the outfit. It looks great.” She paused. “Second, what’s up? I had a feeling this wasn’t just a casual brunch.”

Genevieve smiled as her bodyguard accepted a cup of coffee from the waitress. She nodded her head to him. “I told him he didn’t have to come but protocol and all that.”

Tilly smiled at her friends. “I appreciate you guys coming on such short notice.” She poured out the story about last night, while they all ordered their brunch favorites and had several cups of coffee.

Genevieve nibbled on a piece of bacon.
