Williams believes these lines “contain the essence of Vladimir Nabokov’s metaphysical division. The human eye, he implies, can see only half of the circle (the rainbow’s arc); the other half must be taken on faith.”15 But the roundness, Williams quickly points out, is not exactly the roundness of a circle—more precisely, it is the circle “set free” in a spiral. “I thought this up when I was a schoolboy,” Nabokov writes in Speak, Memory,

and I also discovered that Hegel’s triadic series… expressed merely the essential spirality of all things in their relation to time. ... If we consider the simplest spiral, three stages may be distinguished in it, corresponding to those of the triad: We can call “thetic” the small curve or arc that initiates the convolution centrally; “antithetic” the larger arc that faces the first in the process of continuing it; and “synthetic” the still ampler arc that continues the second while following the first along the outer side.16
