Chapter 10

“You did what? Holy hell, Ellie. What were you thinking?” Jacob’s voice growled through the phone as Ellie lay on the big fluffy bed in her hotel room.

“I didn’t do it. He did.” She’d tried explaining the kiss to her overprotective brother, but as per usual, it wasn’t going well.

“Why would he kiss you?”

She sat up and huffed. “Why wouldn’t he kiss me?”

“I mean that this is a business trip and he’s a professional. Well, he’s supposed to be. Obviously he’s just a pervert.”

“Jacob, you’re being ridiculous. It was a quick peck on the lips, like an affectionate moment between friends,” she explained, wishing she’d have never mentioned it to him now that she had.

“You’re not friends. Sell this bullshit to someone else. I want you to come home.”

“Well, I’m not coming home. I’m a grown ass woman and the sooner you realize that, the better.”

He started up again, but she cut him off, warning that the conversation would be over if he didn’t let it go. With a little more warning, he finally piped down about it. They sat in silence for a few moments before he sighed loudly and changed the subject.

“Did you check for the scar above his eyebrow like I told you? I mean, you were definitely close enough to get a peek at it.” He snorted.

“I’ve noticed it before, but I don’t see how it’s so very important. Oh, I did go to a very odd birthday party for him yesterday.” She sat up on the bed. The large white robe wrapped around her was worth more than all the clothes in her closet added together, she was sure.

“Why was it odd? Did he turn a year younger instead of older? He’s a vampire. I knew it!”

“Not funny. No, it was just that there were so many people there, and they all seemed to know him, but not really know him.” She brushed a small piece of fuzz off the pocket of her robe.

“Kinda like you.”

“Yes, but each of them shared something he’d done in their lives to make things better.”

“Like Mother Theresa?”

“Something like that, but he called himself a Balance Keeper. Not sure what that means, but I’m going to find out. He owns like half the town, from what I can tell, and it’s like he can read my mind and see the future.”

“How many drinks have you had, lush?”

“Only a few, but something is going on here, and I’m seriously jonesing to figure it out.” She stood up and walked to the balcony and moved the curtains aside, giving her a perfect view of the nightlife that occurred just below her.

“Just be careful, okay? I already didn’t like this, and the kiss thing honestly makes it worse. Just don’t let him take advantage of you, and don’t tell me you don’t like him, because I know you do.”

“You’re my twin. You should’ve known that I liked him when I made you do that stakeout with me.” She laughed, and Jacob joined in too before giving her a few more words of warning.
