Chapter 10
âYou did what? Holy hell, Ellie. What were you thinking?â Jacobâs voice growled through the phone as Ellie lay on the big fluffy bed in her hotel room.
âI didnât do it. He did.â Sheâd tried explaining the kiss to her overprotective brother, but as per usual, it wasnât going well.
âWhy would he kiss you?â
She sat up and huffed. âWhy wouldnât he kiss me?â
âI mean that this is a business trip and heâs a professional. Well, heâs supposed to be. Obviously heâs just a pervert.â
âJacob, youâre being ridiculous. It was a quick peck on the lips, like an affectionate moment between friends,â she explained, wishing sheâd have never mentioned it to him now that she had.
âYouâre not friends. Sell this bullshit to someone else. I want you to come home.â
âWell, Iâm not coming home. Iâm a grown ass woman and the sooner you realize that, the better.â
He started up again, but she cut him off, warning that the conversation would be over if he didnât let it go. With a little more warning, he finally piped down about it. They sat in silence for a few moments before he sighed loudly and changed the subject.
âDid you check for the scar above his eyebrow like I told you? I mean, you were definitely close enough to get a peek at it.â He snorted.
âIâve noticed it before, but I donât see how itâs so very important. Oh, I did go to a very odd birthday party for him yesterday.â She sat up on the bed. The large white robe wrapped around her was worth more than all the clothes in her closet added together, she was sure.
âWhy was it odd? Did he turn a year younger instead of older? Heâs a vampire. I knew it!â
âNot funny. No, it was just that there were so many people there, and they all seemed to know him, but not really know him.â She brushed a small piece of fuzz off the pocket of her robe.
âKinda like you.â
âYes, but each of them shared something heâd done in their lives to make things better.â
âLike Mother Theresa?â
âSomething like that, but he called himself a Balance Keeper. Not sure what that means, but Iâm going to find out. He owns like half the town, from what I can tell, and itâs like he can read my mind and see the future.â
âHow many drinks have you had, lush?â
âOnly a few, but something is going on here, and Iâm seriously jonesing to figure it out.â She stood up and walked to the balcony and moved the curtains aside, giving her a perfect view of the nightlife that occurred just below her.
âJust be careful, okay? I already didnât like this, and the kiss thing honestly makes it worse. Just donât let him take advantage of you, and donât tell me you donât like him, because I know you do.â
âYouâre my twin. You shouldâve known that I liked him when I made you do that stakeout with me.â She laughed, and Jacob joined in too before giving her a few more words of warning.
