RUTH AND NICK PULLED up outside Jason Kelly’s house. A uniformed patrol car pulled in behind them. She didn’t want Kelly to do a runner, and she needed his home to be sealed off as a crime scene as quickly as possible.

Ruth banged on the door and waited. Kelly opened the door and peered at them with bleary eyes. The smell of weed was coming from inside the house.

Ruth flashed her warrant card. ‘Jason Kelly, I’m arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Geoff Williams, and the abduction and murder of Rhian Ellroy. You do not have to say anything but it may harm your defence if you do not mention, when questioned, something that you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence. Do you understand?’

The colour drained from Jason’s face. ‘Yeah.’

‘I’m going to need you to accompany us to the station now,’ Ruth said.

‘I didn’t have anything to do with it.’

‘You own a car, Jason?’ asked Nick.

Jason nodded, ‘Yeah.’

Nick gestured to the garage. ‘Is it in there?’

Jason nodded again as Ruth put him in handcuffs.

‘Is it locked?’ Nick asked.

Jason shook his head and said in a virtual whisper, ‘No ...”

Nick took out his forensic gloves and headed over to the garage.

A man in his early 20s appeared walking down the stairs. ‘What the bloody hell is going on, Jase?’ The man had a shaved head and arms covered in tattoos. He was wearing a vest and boxer shorts.

‘Who are you?’ Ruth asked.

‘I’m his brother, Tom,’ he said aggressively.

‘Right, Tom. I’m going to need you to put some clothes on and accompany us to the station too,’ Ruth said calmly.

‘What you arresting Jason for? He hasn’t done anything,’ he said with a sneer.

‘We can talk about that at the station.’

‘I ain’t going nowhere,’ Tom growled.

‘Okay, Tom,’ Ruth said as she gestured to the burly constable who was now on the path nearby. ‘You either go and put some clothes on and come with us quietly, or my officer is going to come in, pin you to the floor, and handcuff you. Then you’re going to have to walk around the custody suite in your boxer shorts.’

‘You can’t do that!’ Tom snapped.

‘Watch me,’ Ruth said.

Tom glared at her but stomped off back up the stairs.

Ruth turned to the constable. ‘Make sure that these two are kept separate in the custody suite, please. I don’t want them getting their stories straight before we talk to them.’

The constable nodded. ‘Of course, ma’am.’

As she led Jason down to the car, Ruth saw Nick coming back from the garage with a grim expression. She opened the rear door to the car and pushed Jason down and inside.

‘What did you find?’ she asked Nick as he reached her.

‘The car stinks of bleach, Boss. Someone’s tried to clean every surface,’ he said. ‘But I found what looks like a droplet of blood in the footwell on the passenger side. I’m sure that the SOCOs will find more.’
