Mike finished reading and glanced down at the cats. Dusty purred at his side, despite her obvious discomfort. He rolled the paper back up and placed it in the foot-locker. It would come in useful if he ever found matches or a cigarette lighter. Then he sat the empty bottle outside the boat, hoping to catch some rainwater so that their supply of bottled water would last longer.

Finished, Mike lay back beneath the boat and tried to get comfortable. It was impossible. With the footlocker and the cats, he barely had room to lie down, let alone stretch out. He thought about the note. Granted, the weather phenomena was weird, but this? The ramblings of a crazy person, obviously. There were probably a lot of people out there like that, trapped and alone and slowly going mad. The guy on the radio in Boston, talking about some weird fungal disease. The woman who’d written this note. When civilization collapsed, a lot of people’s minds had collapsed with it.

Could be me, he thought, and then shrugged. At least he still had the cats. And food and water.

The ground trembled slightly. He felt the vibration run through him.

“What the-”

Midnight hissed. A moment later, Dusty growled, low and deep in her throat. Both cats scratched at the ground beneath them. Midnight was de-clawed but still pawed the surface with an intense urgency. Startled, Mike looked around.

“What’s wrong?”

Their cries changed to frantic mewling. Both cats darted out from beneath the shelter and ran into the rain. Mike crawled out from beneath the boat and shouted for them. Then he felt the island shudder.

“Oh God…”

Beneath him, the island moved again.

His screams were lost beneath the island’s roar.
