Once Folon left, a figure stepped out from behind one of the cavern walls. A slender, tall man towered over Eclipse by at least one foot, his countenance consisting of a long, straight nose and pale skin over high cheek bones. His auburn hair hung below his waist, with the exception of two braids that dangled from his left temple. He wore green satin priestly robes and golden armbands. His green eyes shone with mischief and he carried in his hand a gold and silver pipe.

"That went well," he said with a smile.

"Folon is always very desirous to please me, Piper." Eclipse turned to her accomplice, who smiled lasciviously at her. "Things are coming together rather nicely, are they not?" She gestured to the wall.

The Piper gazed upon the scene and chuckled. "The sickness must remain as part of the manipulation process, but to get Stephen to do what we want, he must remain alive, thus the need for Thaddeus. It is a brilliant strategy, Eclipse. I only hope it works. The Link is not predictable. And I am willing to wager it knows what you are planning."

"Of course, it does. I read the accounts in Ranor's private records. I am well aware the Link could easily keep us from our intended goal. All I care about is finding the Guardian. Stephen will help us do that. The Link will not interfere with anything because it needs Stephen alive as much as we do. Here we are, two enemies working together for a common goal, albeit, indirectly. A very unorthodox partnership. Then again, who am I to care about orthodoxy?"

The Piper pulled her into his arms. "Then we shall make the perfect couple, dear Eclipse."

She grinned, and he brushed the tip of his finger over her fangs, shivering with delight at their sharpness. "Do Gods receive the same delight humans do when given your kiss?"

"No. It is of a much greater intensity."

"And will you give me this kiss?"

"If you're a very good boy, Piper."

"Then what do you wish me to do next?"

"I'll leave that operation to you, this time. Because of Thaddeus's cursed rage, he will refuse to become Stephen's warrior guard. You must help him change his mind."

He grinned as he fingered Eclipse's living, prehensile hair. "You do have a devious way to get what you want. And I do have an idea for that goal. There is a lieutenant amongst the Rashule Honor Guard of Caldys. Lieutenant Riqka. He's been Folon's bedmate a time or two, but the young and brash lieutenant wishes more in the way of recognition and stature. I could easily manipulate him into putting Stephen into a very precarious position, thus making it clear to Thaddeus he is the only one worthy of the position of warrior guard."

Eclipse fingered The Piper's chest. "Just make sure this precarious situation does not end with Stephen's death, Piper."
