Chapter 7 – Invasion
Santos returned to his tribe and met Janaid in the communal house next to the river. Before reporting his findings he took Janaid aside and said.
“Janaid, I have some terrible news, Nugara is dead.”
Janaid look at Santos in amazement, and exclaimed.
“DEAD, what happened? How can that be?”
“I killed him.”
“YOU KILLED HIM!”
“Yes, but before I tell you what happened Janaid, why was Nugara in Machu Picchu without my knowledge?”
“I sent him to protect you, in case you needed help.”
“Protect me! He was there to betray me,” retorted Santos.
“What do you mean?”
“Nugara told the people of Machu Picchu that I was a spy. I think the people there thought it was a joke and laughed it off. I found out where Nugara had camped and queried him on the reason. I know he was jealous of me and after some heated words he attacked me with a knife.”
“I don’t believe you, Nugara wouldn’t do that.”
“He certainly did, and we got into a scuffle. He was prepared to kill me but I overpowered him, and that is when I killed him.”
Janaid contemplated for a while, and then said in a calm voice.
“Nugara was jealous of you Santos, he told me he wanted to go to Machu Picchu instead of you. I can’t believe he would do such a thing. We have to forget about his death and tell our people he was killed in an accident. We have more important things to consider about the invasion of Machu Picchu. Now tell me about your findings.”
Santos imparted the inside knowledge he acquired. This was the information Janaid needed so that he could finalise his plans for the invasion of Machu Picchu. He needed to know the strengths and weaknesses of the Kotowa tribe.
While Santos was away, Janaid used the time to prepare for the invasion, and ensured his army was fighting fit. Janaid already had most of the plans for the attack formulated, and spent the next two weeks finalising them with Santos.
The plan was to first infiltrate Machu Picchu with some of their own warriors. The warriors could pose as traders and visitors from afar. It was decided that the attack on Machu Picchu was to be from the north. The terrain in the valleys leading to the city from the north was the most suitable for the warriors to ascend. North of Machu Picchu also had a dense covering of forest, which allowed the Suvantu to approach unseen.
The ideal time to invade Machu Picchu was during the time of the annual festival when the Kotowa were occupied in the preparation and celebration of their annual harvest. The Kotowa would be off guard and not expecting an attack during this period. It was also a time when the people of Machu Picchu welcomed visitors to their city to join in the celebrations. A number of Janaid’s warriors could infiltrate Machu Picchu as visitors without raising suspicion. Therefore timing of the invasion was one of the most important aspects of Janaid’s planning.
