The Takeaway
Over a 35-year career, I have had an opportunity to see senior people do well and, in some cases, do poorly. I have seen too many intellectually arrogant individuals who think they are the smartest person in the room. Even though they are in a somewhat enviable position, their reputation in the organization begins to get damaged because people say, “You know, this person is going to make me look small and criticize me in front of others.” As a result, they get shut out of the information and opportunities. Or, worse, their leadership—and their team—suffers because no one wants to work with them, let alone for them.
Many times I have had clients hire me to help them find out why their team isn’t producing as well as it once did. Very often, it’s not because the team isn’t producing as well or isn’t smart enough but because members are not willing to put in extra effort because of the way they are being treated.
It’s hard to go to work for someone who has a reputation as a bully or dictator. I have worked with people who have said, “I would rather be unemployed than work for so and so,” because their boss’s reputation is so negative.
Naturally, the reverse is also true: I have personally had two leaders in the past who were so positive, nurturing, and effective that I would go work for them again in a heartbeat. They are very smart and they lead with qualities that I find I am most attracted to in terms of passion, collaboration, and strong leadership.
