Very dear Madame,
This letter will be a little late in bringing you my best wishes, but you surely know that my heart went ahead of my pen in going to find yours, passing through the heart of the Divine Master. I read some beautiful words in the epistles of Saint Peter that express the good wishes of your little Carmelite friend: âSancify the Lord in your heart.â2 To do that, we must carry out those other words of Saint John the Baptist: âHe must increase and I must decrease.â3 Dear Madame, in this New Year that God is giving us to sanctify us and to unite us more closely to Himself, let us make Him grow in our souls, let us keep Him alone and set apart;4 may He be truly King. As for us, let us disappear, let us forget ourselves, let us be only the âpraise of His glory,â5 according to the Apostleâs beautiful expression. I also wish you all the graces of health you need, since youâve been so tried in that respect; remember what Saint Paul said: âI boast of my infirmities, for then the power of Jesus Christ dwells in me.â6 It is all in Godâs will, and rejoice, dear Madame, in your physical sufferings that affect your soul as well, and remember that if you bear this state of powerlessness with fidelity, with love, you can cover Him with glory.7 Our holy Mother Teresa said: when we know how to unite ourselves to God and to His holy will, accepting everything He wishes, we are happy, we possess everything!8 So I wish you that profound peace in the divine good pleasure. I understand all the sacrifices your health imposes, but it is sweet to say to oneself: âIt is He who wishes that.â One day He said to one of His saints: âDrink, eat, sleep, do anything you like, as long as you love Me.â9 It is love that makes His burden so light and His yoke so sweet.10 Let us ask the Divine Infant to consume us in that divine flame, in that fire He came to cast upon the earth.11 I have seen Mama, who was anxiously awaiting the end of Advent to see me; I also had a visit from Marguerite and her dear little Elizabeth, who is very cute. These parlor visits are a great consolation to me and I am so thankful to see all God is doing in these two souls who are so dear to me. A Dieu, dear Madame, I am going to lose myself in Him to find you, since He is our Rendez-vous; say a little prayer for your little friend in Carmel, for she depends very much on it.
