THE AYATOLLAH’S SPIT LIST

“Many of them are deeply disturbing, truly horrifying and bear no relation whatsoever to the true practices and principles of the ancient venerable religion.”

—UK judge Michael Topolski, after viewing jihad videos83

“Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

—the Ayatollah Khomeini84

Chapter Six

“ISLAM SAYS, KILL THEM”

THE ISLAMIC REVOLUTION

The Shah was serious about reforming and modernizing Iranian society. On October 8, 1962, he granted women the right to vote in elections for local councils and gave permission for those elected to take their oaths of office on any sacred book, not just the Qur’an—which meant that they didn’t have to be Muslim.1

The secular and Western-oriented cast of the Shah’s program did not endear him to Iranians who thought such influences were toxic. As the reforms proceeded, an Iranian writer named Jalal Al-e Ahmad wrote a book entitled Gharbzadegi and published it secretly for fear of the Shah’s security services. In its English edition, that title was translated Weststruckness, but the term is actually more pejorative: “Westoxication,” “Westitis,” and “Occidentosis” are all valid renderings.2
