I Woodn’t Do That!

Brass screws are very soft, and you can often break them or at least strip their slots, during installation. To prevent this, I drill pilot holes, and then thread in a steel screw identical to the brass ones I’ll be using, remove it, and then install the brass one. This way, less torque is applied to the brass screw.

Screws come in boxes of a hundred. Rather than try to keep a supply of every screw size on hand, I keep a selection of the sizes I use the most and just keep track of my stock in those sizes (although I do have boxes of just about every size left over from one specialty job or another). To keep my screws organized, I keep them all in one area, with brass screws in one cabinet and steel screws in another. Each numerical size gets its own shelf, #4, #6, #8, and so on, with boxes arranged by group in order of length. This arrangement allows me to lay my hands on the ones I need quickly and to keep track of my stock.
