PRO TIP

BRYAN J. L. GLASS: WRITING FOR COLOR

Color can be as effective a storytelling tool as line art, panel layout, or text. As color conveys mood and emotion, color notes in the script can set a tone and reveal emotion. Color often provides the subtext of a scene. Establish the intended atmosphere via a “downcast gray sky,” the “warm orange glow of a fire,” and so on, yet allow the colorist freedom to express their interpretation. If the specific color of an object, clothing, or locale is important, identify it: red sports car, yellow dress, blue tie. I strive to provide colorists with their own version of my scripts with such color indicators highlighted, as well as specific coloring notes that have often been inspired by the finished line work. A colorist is more than just a necessary cog in the production machine. Respect and communicate with them as part of the creative team.
