Volume

Volume helps to make a rough outline of skull prior to drawing hair. You have to keep in mind the shape of human head, which is 3-dimentional of course, in mind. There is a certain height of hair above the head and on sides as well.

Flow

The flow of the hair depends on the structure underneath. When the hairs are long, they flow down, embrace the head and drape around the shoulders. The strokes while drawing hairs should be simple and loose.

Value- mid tones, shadows and highlights

Before you sit down to draw hair of a character, take some time to observe the source of light, mid tones, shadows, and highlights. The source of light affects the tonal value of hair. You can draw the darker areas first to cover up the most area before you indulge in small details.
