Roof Framing

The two basic types of roof framing consist of stick-built roofs and roof trusses. As with floor trusses, roof trusses have the advantage of being very sturdy for their size and weight. In most house designs, roof trusses require no load-bearing walls between the exterior walls. This gives you more flexibility in designing the interior of your home. Roof trusses are also generally cheaper than stick-built roofs because of significant labor savings in construction. Their only major disadvantage is the lack of attic space as a result of the cross member supports. This can be alleviated somewhat by ordering “space saving” trusses that have the inner cross members engineered to provide more attic space. Stick-built roofs are more appropriate for high pitches or oddly shaped roof lines.
