Assume that you are shooting the VOR/DME or GPS-A into Wheeler, Texas, without an approved GPS on board—see Figure 10-18. (Why doesn’t the title of the approach have a runway number in it? Because there are no straight-in minimums.) Crossing directly over the VOR shouldn’t be a problem, but consider how radials spread out with distance from the facility—28.4 miles out times 100 feet of spread per mile equals 2,840 feet, or almost one-half mile per degree. Depending on the method of VOR checking you use, your VOR indicator could be as much as six degrees in error and still be legal—that would put you more than three miles away from the airport with a centered CDI needle. My point is that the farther the airport is from the facility, the sharper you have to be. If you have to be wrong, be sure that you make your mistakes into the wind.
