Fra Lippi and Me

Written in 1937 or 1938, this story remained unpublished until it appeared in the Georgia Review 33 (Winter 1979): 867–75, accompanied by a brief introduction by Glenda Hobbs, author of a 1975 Harvard dissertation about Harriette Arnow. As Hobbs explains, this story is “one of a dozen distinguished stories she wrote in the late thirties. ‘Fra Lippi and Me’ was inspired by Browning's poem ‘Fra Lippo Lippi.’” Prior to writing this story, the author had supported herself by working as a waitress in the Women's Exchange in Cincinnati.
