The next two seasons were a great success. In the spring of 1854 Davidson got his own ship. It was a good idea, because he and Alden constantly irritated each other. Davidson and Lawson ventured into the far north to survey the Puget Sound. Alden worked there too, with his nephew, James Madison Alden, an artist. The western ports were already changing rapidly. The survey hired the younger Alden to paint them to preserve their history.

Another artist, William McMurtrie, drew all the major headlands and river entrances. Navigators relied almost entirely on their eyesight in the days before radar. McMurtrie's views were printed on the charts to help them find their way.

Davidson and Lawson were told they would be out West for only one year. Five years later, they had covered more than three thousand miles of rugged coastline. The weary men had made scores of hazardous surf landings. Bache finally let them go home in the fall to visit their families.
