Chapter 6

As soon as all of the dinner plates were cleared, Garrett got up and started making his way over to Brittany’s table.

He was about halfway to where Brittany was sitting, when he was stopped by Landon Cook. “Hey, Garrett! Nice seeing you sober!”

Garrett shuddered inwardly as Landon clapped him on the shoulder. “Well, I’m sober under most circumstances.”

Landon chuckled. “Aren’t we all? Man, that was a fun bonfire the other night. We should do it again!”

Garrett looked past Landon’s head to try to catch a glimpse of Brittany. “Yeah, sure thing,” he said to Landon. He would have said anything just to get rid of the guy. He needed to talk to Brittany.

“When? Maybe next weekend?”

Garrett looked back at Landon. He was nothing but an obstacle standing in his way to the girl of his dreams. “Yeah. You plan it and just let me know. I gotta go,” he said as he pushed past Landon.

“All right!” Landon called out.

Garrett didn’t even turn around. He had his mind set on talking to Brittany again as soon as possible, and that’s what he was going to do. He was almost to her table when she stood up, seemingly unaware that he was on his way over.

He stopped, hoping he’d be able to reroute and catch her wherever she was going. He watched her for a minute to decide which way to head, and it didn’t take long for him to realize she was not going back to her seat anytime soon.

Brittany walked over to where the band was getting ready to play. The stage was set up at the edge of the large area that had been left open for the dance floor. She started chatting with one of the band members, then began unraveling the cord to a microphone. She plugged the end of the cord into a speaker, then put the mic on its stand, and adjusted the height.

As Garrett watched her, he realized she was getting ready to perform. It had been years since Garrett had heard Brittany sing. The last time he was pretty sure it was “The Star-Spangled Banner” at a baseball game.

Even though Garrett was disappointed that he hadn’t been able to catch her before she got up on stage, he was excited to hear her beautiful voice. He’d always been in awe of the way she effortlessly hit note after note perfectly on pitch.

Brittany had one of those voices that wasn’t just nice to listen to, but incredibly moving. He’d always encouraged her to perform and develop her gift, even when other people had insisted that there were better ways she could spend her time.

Realizing he was standing alone, staring at Brittany, Garrett scanned the room to see if anyone had caught him shamelessly gawking. He still needed to talk to Brooklyn, and he saw her sitting at the table Brittany had just left. He really did want to let Brittany know that he was taking the job first, but he didn’t want Brooklyn to hire someone else because she wasn’t sure.
