In the fourteenth century Dante cast the Roman poet Virgil as his guide in his poem Inferno (or Hell—part of his Divine Comedy). In this painting, Dante and Virgil in Hell (1822), the French artist Eugène Delacroix pictures the two poets in the underworld.
