Chapter Thirty-Two

Winter stared hollow-eyed and exhausted as the doctor checked her out. Satchel’s wounds were so much worse than hers, and he’d been taken into surgery. Two hours. Her daughter had been gone two hours.

She had screamed when Satchel had said the words, but he’d held his hands up immediately. “No, I mean… she’s not dead, she’s gone.” The seat belt on Sukie’s car seat had been cut. Her daughter had been abducted.

Frantic phone calls to Guy Holbrook. “We’re on it, Winter. We’ll get her back.”

“It’s him.”

“I know.”

And now Winter was calm. Icy calm. An FBI agent from the local Portland office had arrived at the hospital. “We think your car was hit, but it didn’t immediately go into the water. Your daughter was cut out of it first, then the car was pushed into the water by the other vehicle.”

Winter looked at him. “What now?”

“We’ve stopped all flights from the surrounding airports, and we’re checking every highway and interstate. We’ll find her, Winter.”

But Winter’s rage, anger, and terror meant that was not satisfying. She demanded to speak directly to Holbrook, and when she was put through, she outlined her plan.

“I can’t let you do that, Winter.”

“Sukie is my daughter, Agent Holbrook. Ever tried to stop a mother protecting her child? Find her.”
