Chapter Four

“T

ansy, to what do I owe the pleasure… at seven in the morning?”

“Oops, sorry. You were the first thing I thought of this morning.” I instantly blush. That is not the way I wanted that to sound.

“Well, then, how can I help you?” He chuckles on the other end.

“Sorry, that came out wrong. Something happened last night that was a little weird. After the tree lighting, we saw Sylvia with another woman. They were arguing, and then the woman slapped her.”

“Really? She didn’t say anything to me. Did you recognize her?”

“No. Eden and Millie were with me, too. Eden thought she looked familiar, but she couldn’t place her.”

I hear movement through the phone, and then a car door opens. He must be on his way to work.

“I wonder why she didn’t say anything. Maybe because it was late. This certainly falls under the category of people who might not like her.”

“She seemed pretty upset. My guess is she was waiting for this morning, but I felt bad not telling you right away, so, you ended up with this early morning call. Sorry, again. Oh! And she doesn’t know we saw anything. We didn’t want to embarrass her.”

“Don’t apologize. I was only kidding. If anyone is going to wake me up in the morning, I would like it to be you. And I’m not sorry about that.”

He hangs up, and I’m left dumbfounded on the other line. What just happened?

You look like you won the lottery with that dopey smile. Are you okay?

I am. I’m better than okay.

That’s the closest either of us has come to admitting there might be something between us. The comment pushes me to kick my Secret Santa butt into gear. I finish my breakfast and get ready to head into town. On my way, I decide to stop in and Sugar & Spice for a hot chocolate. One, because I love them and, two, to see how Sylvia is. I’m contemplating whether I should say something about the woman from last night as I round the corner by the Christmas tree. There’s a group of people standing around, and everyone seems upset. Passing by, I see Nathan’s SUV pulling in as well.

I drop Hank off at the store after parking and walk up the street to see what the fuss is all about. I see clearly now that the mayor, Sylvia, and Dwight are all crowded around the tree, with Nathan as well.

“Tansy! Look at what happened!” Sylvia is near panic mode, waffling between jagged tears and wailing. She’s holding the garland she worked on all year in her hands. Well, pieces of it anyway. It looks like someone grabbed scissors and hacked away at it.

“Sylvia. I’m so sorry. Who would do such a thing?” I immediately think of the woman from last night, but I want to give her a chance to offer the information up.

“I don’t know. I just can’t believe this is happening. And when I walked in this morning, all my canisters were open, the contents thrown all over the floor.
