Chapter 3

Holly heard a commotion downstairs.

It would be her father looking for her. It sounded like they had a visitor. A vendor, most likely.

Father probably needed her to write a check or some other piece of business.

She knew that he relied upon her mostly to give her something to take her mind off of things.

It was funny, really, how even though everything changed with the war, everything kept moving forward.

She pulled her gaze away from the second-story window and looked down at the little straw bassinet at her feet.

The baby was wrapped snuggly in a gray blanket, sound asleep.

Ava was only three months old, but already she had her father’s eyes.

Every time Holly looked at her daughter, she saw Christopher.

Christopher would never meet his daughter.

He’d lost his life shortly after they’d been married.

He’d fallen during a little skirmish on December 20, 1862 at a train depot at Holly Springs.

Holly Springs.

Sometimes Holly hated her name and sometimes the irony of it all just made her cry.

But she had Ava.

She turned back for one more look outside before she gathered up her daughter to go downstairs and back to the reality that stopped for no one.

And there on the window ledge sat a beautiful crimson cardinal.

The bird looked right at her with his deep fathomless eyes.

And Holly heard the echo of Christopher’s voice in her ear.

I want our love to last. Not to be fleeting like the cardinal.

If only he’d lived to know that they’d made a baby that night.

And their love would last through eternity through that baby born of love.

Ava.

Little bird.
