Chapter seventeen
Jayden
Itâs been a day so far. Having Mia in the kitchen with me while we prepared the food was amazing. Landry stayed outside, something he had already told me he was going to do to allow us more time to get to know each other. Instead, Iâm choking, clamming up and barely saying anything.
Yeah, I made a couple of innuendos, which Iâm not sure if she picked up on or not. Itâs hard to tell if she did and I offended her or if she's just quiet because sheâs shy. Either way, I want to know more about her. Thereâs a deep sadness in her eyes, one I know well because I see it staring back at me every time I look in the mirror. The only difference is hers holds a void mine hasnât reached yet.
âSo, Mia, I was wondering if you would like to hang out on Saturday afternoon. We could catch a movie, or take Lucky to the park and have a picnic?â I ask nervously.
âYou want to hang out? Like a date?â Her forehead wrinkles as she stares at me.
âYeah, I mean⦠If you just want to do it as friends, thatâs okay. But to be clear, I was asking you on a date. Me, you, and Lucky, if you want him to come.â
She looks at me like she can see right through me, not saying a word, and I panic. Was I too forward?
âUmm⦠are you sure? I mean⦠donât you have someone else you want to ask out?â she says, fidgeting.
âNope,â I tell her flatly, upset that sheâd think Iâd pick anyone over her. âYouâre the only one I want to ask. So is that a yes?â I step closer, her intoxicating scent engulfing me, causing my cock to twitch in recognition.
Her breath hitches as I invade her space. Itâs taking everything in me to fight the urge to pull her into me and crash my mouth onto hers. But sheâs skittish, like a wild horse. I know I have to be gentle, or sheâll run.
âWell?â I ask her again.
âOkay. That sounds fun.â Her voice is soft as she speaks.
âPerfect, we can plan it this week, maybe over lunch one day since Iâll be working at your dadâs clinic building the new enclosures.â A smile beams on my face. She still looks skeptical, but I can be patient.
Landry chooses that moment to step in the back door, and I'd be remiss if I didnât notice the hopeful look on his face when he gazes at me. He knew I was going to ask. Moving my eyes down to my hand, he follows my movement. I shoot him a thumbs up, and a shit-eating grin crosses his face.
âOkay, the grill is hot. Is the food ready?â Landryâs booming voice fills the room.
âIt is. Iâve tenderized and seasoned the steaks. Mia even threw together kabobs with some chicken and veggies and made a salad. Iâd say all we need to do is cook it now,â I tell him, gesturing over to the beauty at the kitchen counter.
