Chapter Eleven

ONCE ITS THOUGHTS had been clearer, it was pretty sure of that. Clean and simple. Now its mind was a rattling jar of fragments, a scattershot of urges, colours and sounds that got more confusing day after day. The only way to exist in the chaos was to follow instinct, don’t challenge, don’t question, just do.

It felt wind in its gut from the hasty meal it had snatched in the shadows of the car park. A drive-through snack just to take the edge off. It expelled a hot trickle of reflux from the corner of its mouth and poked a finger at the aching lump in its belly.

It ran a split, yellow nail over the freshest of its wounds, probing the wet flesh and estimating a healing time. Not long, a couple of minutes perhaps for a perfect join.

Its stomach rumbled, acid juices fizzing. It was so hungry.

It explored the smells surrounding it, its mouths watering at the scent of sweat and leather that was so close by. It was no good, it must eat. No rushed snacks though, it would have to engineer a little privacy…

It stretched out its long fingers and explored the possibilities… ah… yes… that should do it…
