How Long Does It Take?

Students and young preachers want to know how long it takes to prepare a sermon. It is impossible to give a simple reply. The best answer is “your whole life!” In a way, every sermon is influenced by everything we have ever learned, and is a reflection of the kind of person we have become over the years. The reason it is difficult to calculate the actual hours is because no-one can say precisely when the process begins. Shall we include the time spent in background reading? After we have been studying and preparing for a few years, we never come to a verse or passage which we have not read or thought about before. So we come to it with the ideas we have gathered over time.

However, as a rough guideline, I think that beginners will need ten to twelve hours from the moment the text is chosen to the moment the sermon is written out. Experienced preachers are not likely to reduce this to less than five to six hours. On average, one needs at least one hour’s preparation for every five minutes preached.
