Matias Reyes was born in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, in 1971. When he was just a few years old, his mother moved to New York, leaving him behind with his father. His father was a farmworker, and young Matias often helped him with jobs that included slaughtering pigs. Reyes told a psychologist that his father had abused his mother, and that his grandmother had told him that his father bought him from his mother for four hundred dollars before she moved to New York. He eventually followed his mother to New York City, and he moved back and forth between there and Puerto Rico several times in his early teenage years. He claims to have been sexually abused when he was seven, though, depending on the account, it was either by two male strangers or by family members.

A school report from when he was fourteen noted behavioral problems and labeled him “emotionally disturbed.” School records and studies by various psychologists all found his IQ to be in the low or mid-seventies.

According to some reports, when he was fifteen and living in New York, he sexually abused his own mother. He moved back to Puerto Rico for a time and never saw his mother again. By the time he was seventeen, in 1988, Reyes was living in New York and working at a bodega on 102nd Street near Third Avenue, across the street from the 23rd Precinct.
