CHAPTER 6

A Franz Gudderwiest Original

MOTHY RAISED A SCEPTICAL eyebrow.

“The mythical mermaid city made by the gods?”

“The very same.”

“That no one has been able to locate and map since the first story was made about it?”

“Exactly.”

Wolflock’s sheer enthusiasm wavered for a moment under Mothy’s scrutinising gaze, but his friend shrugged and flopped onto the floor next to him. “I’m in. How are we doing this?”

“I’m glad you asked! We just need to-”

Wolflock stopped as Captain Blutro came back in, looking around and sniffed the air.

“Ah... I suspected as much. Boys, this room can’t handle the mermaid any longer. Windows open or not. I won’t be able to sleep with my sheets smelling like raw fish.”

“But we’re so close to finding the answers!” Wolflock pleaded.

The captain shook his head. “Take only the specific books you need and make your study base in the dining hall. Smartly, now.”

They picked up the books Wolflock deemed that they needed, as well as a flora and fauna one with many pictures for Himi, and carted them back and forth to the dining hall. Mothy was in good spirits about the move because they could drink all the tea they wanted while they worked.

Himi followed them up and down, scooting along behind them like it was a game.

“I have to go and get my map and the captain’s pencils. Keep her entertained for a moment, will you?” He waved at Mothy who nodded and started teaching Himi the common names for the creatures she pointed at.

He made his way back down the stairs, and he stopped outside Faleen and Bleen’s door. Thick streams of incense smoke were wafting out and he could hear Faleen talking. It wasn’t her usual haughty tone, but frightened and urgent. A sharp flash of satisfaction washed through him as he pressed his ear to the door.

The only noises he could make out were two people talking in what sounded like Northern Shellinmerth. He hadn’t heard anyone on board speak any of the Shellinmerth languages. It had a distinct flow to it that made the sentences sound like one long word. Nothing like his own language, which gave clear separation to the words. Far more punctuated.

“What are you doing, Wolflock?”

He jumped in surprise and span mid-air to see Bleen behind him with her usual smile.

“Oh, nothing. Just... uh... resting. I’m still so weary from the accident last night.”

“You poor thing. As long as you’re not doing any investigating. We’ll have to stop you for your own good, you know?” She wagged her long, manicured nail at him.

“Ha. Of course. Merry part,” he nodded, turning on his heel and walking away as quickly as he could.

He felt her watching him as he made his way to the Captain’s cabin. He didn’t want to let her know what he was up to, so he knocked and waited, leaning on the wall in the same way he’d done at her door.

Yes. This looks completely normal.

He picked at his nails, waiting for her to leave, when he saw Slavidus’ door was ajar, hearing two voices starting to rise from the room.
