CHAPTER 6

Thirsty Dreams Drunk Dry

WOLFLOCK FROWNED. SOMETHING wasn’t right. The three of them ascended the stairs into the crew quarters, then reached the stairs to the passenger cabins.

“Wait!”

Nü and Mothy turned to him.

“Take them to my room.”

They looked warily at each other but shrugged and did as they were bid. Wolflock lead the way. As he came to the passenger hallway someone caught his eye. Captain Blutro was coming out of his room. The tall captain turned and stared, his eyebrows furrowed, and his mouth pressed into a disapproving line.

Wolflock shrugged, moving to his room. The captain had commissioned him to do a job and he was going to do it. There was no point worrying about the means when the ends would be discovered. He laid each bottle flat in his shoe draw, locking it with the room key.

“There. That will keep them safe. We can’t give these to the captain yet. We don’t have our smuggler. These can possibly be used as bait to get to them. Also, the captain has been a bit... unstable, shall we say, in regard to this. He might do something to alert the smuggler, which would drive them underground.”

“I’m sure he’s aware of this, Lockie,” Mothy frowned, unconvinced.

“As am I. But emotions can make people act outside of their best interests. For now, let’s continue our investigation. I would rather give him everything finished with a seal and tie, than with loose pages flying about.”

“You mean you’d rather make sure you can show off to your full potential.” Mothy added, inciting a chuckle from Nü.

“What’s life without a bit of theatrics? What say you, Nü? Will you assist us?”

Nü smiled, shaking her head. “You will both be the end of me as Nan Nü.”

Wolflock thought it was a strange saying, but he shrugged, understanding her answer to be a yes.

“What would you have me do?”

“Let me think first. Things have been odd on the ship of late and I must put them into place.”

Mothy and Nü sat on his bed while Wolflock began pacing again. In his mind’s eye he saw a great spiderweb weave before him. The strands leading towards the centre were clear. Slavidus’ strand didn’t reach the middle, neither did Yifi’s, cut off by the clues that resolved and joined them.

Froderyk’s and Nan Ji’s threads may yet reach the conclusion. Haatji’s thread remained thin, still drifting about in the breeze. The only thing linking her to any of this was her slur the previous evening and flirting with Geagle on the dock.

Each clue, each motivation, made the threads thicker and stronger, drawing them to the centre. Only the thread with the most definitive evidence would touch the centre, though.

With Nü sitting in his room, his thoughts focused around her father. He was able to order medicinal alcohol, so why not recreational? He had been in a foul mood since he’d nearly crashed into them at the post office. Had he been drinking even then? Mothy said alcohol affected ones temper too.
