Chapter Seven

The IRS left them in peace for the next three weeks and their days fell into a pleasant routine. Every morning, Leah rose early, fought Missy over her morning test and shot, then made breakfast. Trip came downstairs dressed for the office and kissed Missy, then he smiled at Leah as if he liked looking at her. At the breakfast table, he listened while Leah read a passage from the Bible, then he led the morning prayer as her father had once done. He ate breakfast with them and left the house well before eight o’clock.

Leah found it hard to understand how he made time to mind her business along with his own during the long hours he worked. Somehow, he found time to monitor the progress of her car repairs and to have clothing in her sizes sent to the house for her to try on and choose from. Of course he used shops his mother had dealt with, but Leah still found it incredible he remembered such details. She had trouble just making out her grocery list these days, thanks to the vast changes Missy’s new routine caused in her life.

He liked the responsibility, she realized. He simply added her problems to the list of things he expected to deal with and got them taken care of in the same orderly fashion he used to take care of his own business.

She and Missy spent several days sifting through their belongings in her old house and packing up them up. Trip gave her a cell phone and kept close tabs on them, often driving over to load the boxes she packed into his Bronco.

You’ve done enough. He finally took the broom away from her and set it in a corner of the empty house. I’ll send my cleaning service over to give the place a thorough cleaning, so it’ll be ready for the new pastor. He put an arm around her and gave her a light hug. We’ll consider it part of our tithe.

Trip came home early one afternoon and found her, staring out a second floor window at the activity in her old back yard. He stood behind her, peering over her shoulder into the kitchen of the other house. Leah registered his presence with a quickening of her heart.

Looks like the new pastor is moving in, Trip observed.

Yes, she said in hollow tones. Isn't it ridiculous? I was so relieved to be done with the place, especially after the burglary. So why am I up here, spying on what they’re up to?

I think it’s called ‘former owner’s jitters.’ You'll get over the condition when they paint the house yellow and replant the yard.

His arms went around her waist, and he laid his chin on her shoulder, ostensibly to watch the two, small children racing around the back yard.

Do you see that? Leah demanded. They're running through my mint bed.

She hardly knew what disturbed her more, the demise of her mint plants or Trip's warm breath in her ear.
