* One assumes Holmes is here referring to Inspector Stanley Hopkins of Scotland Yard, whom he did not encounter until 1895. Nevertheless, narrating these events in 1912, Holmes was doubtless using Hopkins as an example of the best that the Yard had to offer.

† Holmes’s abilities as a boxer, swordsman, singlestick player, and baritsu expert are too well known to need description here.

‡ Baron Jacques de Reinach was one of the earliest backers of Ferdinand de Lesseps’ French scheme to build a canal across the Isthmus of Panama. That effort collapsed after ten years in the largest financial scandal of the nineteenth century, while Holmes was in Paris. De Reinach subsequently committed suicide.

§ This aristocratic family was hunted to the brink of extinction during the Terror (1793), but survived in an offshoot who called himself Darnay. One of Darnay’s descendants (he married the daughter of a Bastille prisoner and produced children by her) evidently reassumed the family name and tide.
