CAMINO LESSON—
NURTURE ACQUAINTANCES INTO RELATIONSHIPS.
Connect on Social Networks—When you meet a new person at work, ask him if he’s on LinkedIn and would mind if you sent him a connection request. Send the request promptly. Don’t follow up with him, however, if he doesn’t respond. If he wants to connect, he has your connection at hand. If he doesn’t respond, it may simply be that he doesn’t log on often or isn’t comfortable connecting.
Join or Create Alumni Groups—If you are connected with several former colleagues from the same job, see if there is a private group for alumni of that organization on Facebook and LinkedIn. If there isn’t such a group, consider launching one. Use the group to share articles and news that people in the group might find uniquely interesting.
Find Excuses to Reach Out—Once you are connected, find meaningful ways to reach out to your connection to let him know you are thinking about him from time to time. At the minimum, when you see him start a new job, congratulate him. When he posts something you find useful, take the one second it requires to hit the “like” button or the few seconds it takes to make a comment. (They will notice.) If you see an article or post you think he would find useful, forward it to him. Don’t overdo it, but you should try to reconnect in some small way with everyone in your network at least once a year.
Find Opportunities to Meet—If you are traveling on business to another city, search your network to see who in your network lives there. Arrange a meeting if possible.
Identify Ways to Help Them—When you hear of a job or business opportunity that is not right for you to pursue, search your network for others who might be interested. Forwarding a potential job or sale opportunity is a great way to reconnect. Your contacts will appreciate the help and be more open to future messages you send.
