XII. The Night of the Bad Deed

“Certainly,” said Jean Noël, “I’ve accomplished many bad deeds in my life, but I don’t have any remorse about them. Perhaps those bad deeds only enclosed a tiny drop of evil. Only one makes me suffer when I think about it, in spite of the fact that it did no harm to anyone and I know that I’ve done worse.

“When one has just arrived in Naples an one asks the porter in one’s hotel where one can go for a stroll for an hour or two, he indicates a place above the city, the name of which I no longer remember, where there’s a museum, or a church, or a viewpoint for contemplation, or perhaps all three. That’s what happened to me. I spotted a cab passing in front of the hotel, I gave him the name of the promenade in question, and we set forth.

“Naples was enveloped by clouds that day and I was in a very bad mood in not seeing the sunlit beauties I had imagined. It was a somber city that I was traversing. I perceived the profile of the coachman in front of me. He was astonishingly thin and old, with a short and singular beard. His garments were very poor. As for the horse, it was a creature even thinner than its master and more fleshless, whose like I had never seen before. Its trot was exceedingly slow, and the entire vehicle was creaking as if it were about to break.

“My ill humor was augmented by traversing the city in such a grotesque rig.
