Sam’s phone buzzed in the pocket of her hoodie. She hadn’t heard from anyone today—not even Lindsay—but she suspected her sister was still feeling the effects of their fight last week. And the one Sam, herself, instigated via text message. Right now, Sam couldn’t care any less about what they’d fought about; it really didn’t matter. Of course, she worried about Lindsay, she always would, but Luciana was right. Lindsay did choose to be with Janet and Sam had to accept that. She couldn’t do any more than she had so far, and lately, she didn’t want to. Lindsay had said what she needed to say. Sam would accept her opinion and move on.

Sam took her phone from her pocket, finding Cheryl’s name on the screen. She’d briefly spoken to her yesterday with the help of Luciana, and her gut was telling her that this was about to be the backlash from her decision to cancel the build until further notice.

C: How are you feeling, boss?

S: I’ve certainly felt better. Enjoying your time off?

C: No. I’m still at the office.

Sam frowned. She’d told Cheryl to take some paid time off. It was useless being at the office if Sam wasn’t there with her. After all, she was Sam’s assistant.

S: Why are you at the office?

C: Dealing with the onslaught of abuse from your contractors.

S: What?

Sam’s anger rose. How dare any of her contractors treat Cheryl that way. Sam knew it was because she wasn’t around. None of them were usually this brave.

C: Paynter seems to think he can rule the entire thing because he has the most to lose in all of this. I don’t think he realises that they never had the opportunity to ACTUALLY sign anything yet.

S: Paynter can do as he pleases. The build IS off.

C: And I told him as much.

S: Anything from anyone else?

C: Ruth from the accounts department of Gregson asked for your address. She wanted to send on some flowers to you. I told her to send them to the office and I’d make sure you got them.

S: That’s sweet.

Sam smiled. It actually felt quite nice to hold a conversation with someone who wasn’t in the house with her. It may be via text message, but she was taking what she could get right now.

C: Most of them have been. Some, not so much.

S: Let me contact them. I’ll get back to you.

C: Sam, you have enough to deal with. Let me handle this. It’s the least I can do.

S: I don’t follow?

C: You told me I didn’t need to be at the meeting on Monday. You effectively saved my life.

Sam hadn’t thought about that. She hadn’t had the time to think about it. It wasn’t important, everything happens for a reason, but Cheryl’s appreciation didn’t go unnoticed by Sam.

S: Nonsense. I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

C: No. I ALWAYS go to meetings with you, Sam. I’m basically glued to your hip 90% of the day. You did save my life.
