BUTLER’S TIP

Never fold a napkin over your arm. Although some waiters and maître d’s do, it serves no purpose. Moreover, by doing this you’ll draw attention to yourself—something butlers are never supposed to do.

MENU CARDS

Not all events require a menu card, and the more casual ones certainly do not. It would seem a tad pretentious to prepare a menu card for a family dinner by the pool with your neighbours. So when are they appropriate? If many courses are being served, the card allows guests to pace themselves. Also, a guest may be allergic to or simply dislike a certain dish, and a menu card will allow them to avoid it without awkwardness. Menu cards remove the element of surprise, and are a courtesy for your guests.
