We will now consider elements included only in later Gospels, which strike a historian as attempts to make the burial of Jesus appear to have been more honorable than it actually was. Such details regularly contradict earlier sources, but at the very least they are absent from the earliest passion narrative, that in the Gospel of Mark. In each case, a historian will ask why that detail was added to the earlier account, and why emphasis is placed upon it in the later author’s retelling of the story. Why emphasize that the linen sheet was clean and the tomb unused , for example (Mt. 27:58-59)? Presumably because there was a version of story already circulating in which the contrary was either assumed or explicitly stated. Often, emphatic assertions are important clues to what others were saying, even when those other voices left no written accounts of their side of the story. Let us now look at a few examples of these later additions of an apologetic character.
