VITAMIN C

This is one of the safest, most effective supplements you can take. Vitamin C is needed for the formation of collagen and connective tissue as well as for manufacturing glutathione, the most powerful antioxidant in the body. Vitamin C can enhance immune function and help prevent free radical damage.

It’s hard to get enough vitamin C from food. Some fruits and vegetables are naturally high in vitamin C, like broccoli, cauliflower, and of course oranges. But cooking and storage methods can deplete it in many foods. This is why about 20 percent of the population is vitamin C deficient.12

While studies have shown that you can take up to 120 grams of vitamin C a day with no side effects other than loose stool,13 your body can often tolerate a lot more when it’s sick or under stress. The more sick or stressed you are, the more C you can tolerate without getting to a “disaster pants” level of stool softness. I’ve done some ridiculous biohacks with vitamin C. When I realized how badly antibiotics had messed up my gut, I was determined to never take them again. Anytime I got sick after that, I turned to extremely high doses of vitamin C to cure me. One time I got a massive sinus infection, probably the worst one of my life. I took 100 grams of vitamin C orally, which is an extremely high dose, and then went to a doctor who agreed to administer an additional 150 grams via IV. Even this high dose didn’t give me loose stools, which means my body was using all of it to fight the infection. If your body is stressed, it will drink vitamin C like water, so take extra if you’re having a rough day, traveling, or feeling under the weather.

Dose: 1 to 2 g per day (more if you are suffering from chronic infections or healing after an injury)

Form: Ascorbic acid crystals or time-release capsules

Time to Take: Morning and evening, but not after a workout since isolated antioxidants can negate the insulin sensitivity gained from exercise

The only time I used to take vitamins C and D was when I started to feel sick and would “megadose” on them for a few days. Since starting the Bulletproof Diet, I supplement with C and D daily, along with K2 and iodine and then magnesium at night. I cannot remember the last time I was sick, and I believe it is thanks to healthier eating and supplementing. Also, I have better and deeper sleep when I take magnesium before bed. —Greg
