This had been a stupid idea. The snow wasn’t gone from a lot of the trail. Selena had slipped and almost fell twice, but he had to give it to her, she was a trouper. She kept saying she was still game. But even he was losing faith in the fun part of the day. They came across a small bench that had an overlook for the lake. “Let’s sit a moment.”

“If you want to.” Selena glanced toward the trail. “I’m still okay to go on.”

He used his glove to wipe the snow off the top of the bench, then he sank down onto it. “I’m thinking that maybe we should turn back. We’ll stop at our places and drive over to that hot springs pool and soak in one of those private tubs.”

“I’d say I’m not that kind of girl, but that’s sounding good to me too.” Selena reached down and rubbed her ankle. “I’m a little out of shape for hiking I guess.”

“You’ve been amazing.” He picked up her leg and studied her ankle after pushing down her sock. He rubbed the area gently with his fingers. “Are you sure you didn’t sprain this on the last slip down the hill? It looks a little beat up.”

“I’d argue, but your fingers are helping it feel better. I might have done a little more damage than I thought.” As if to prove the point, she whimpered when he touched a spot that appeared to be bruising.

“You okay everywhere else?” He studied her face. The sharpness that he’d seen in pictures taken years ago was gone. Replaced with a softness and from what he could tell, happiness.

“I’ve got some wounded pride back here. I wanted to prove to you that I could hike just as far and as fast as you could. Now I’m going to limp back to town and hope no one sees me crying.” She pulled two granola bars out of the pocket of her coat. “I was going to keep both of them for me, but I’m thinking you need your strength, just in case you have to carry me down the hill.”

He nodded and took the granola bar. He gazed out on the lake. “I have to admit, this place just takes your breath away at times.”

“Always.” She opened her bar and took a bite. “You should ride. The boys can take you to some backwoods lakes that you can only get to via foot and horse. It’s like you’re on another planet. You can find yourself out there.”

He pulled up her sock and then let her leg lay on his lap while he ate his treat. “I didn’t know I was lost, but I get your drift. Even right here, you start to question a lot of things. Like how much television you watch and why you don’t live in the woods all year round.”

She shook her head. “I’d never make it. I like indoor plumbing and long hot showers too much to give it up for peace of mind.
