Chapter 11

“All clear, topside.” Smith turned and nodded at me, relaying the information he was receiving from his earpiece.

I looked at her, drew her back so that I could see her face now that her sobs had subsided, and said, “Are you ready to get out of here?”

She looked at me with caution.

“We will protect you, you know that, don’t you?”

She glanced from me to Smith and back and then nodded and smiled, still a bit grim.

“Hey now, you cost me more than this boat. I always protect my investments.” I chuckled, allowing the light to reach my eyes, knowing she needed the levity of a little playfulness right now.

She chuckled.

I pulled her to me and gave her a big squeeze. I think she likes that she almost broke my bank. I laugh with her.

“Come on. Let’s get you into some proper clothes.”

We stood, while Smith opened the door and checked the hallway, just as several other officers arrived.

“Let me get her situated and then I want a full report. And walk me through the damage.” I said over my shoulder as I checked Jana for any bruises or cuts.

“I’m fine, really,” she said.

“Good.” I hoisted her up and over one shoulder as I had last night, and she gave another squeal, just as pleased this time.
