CHAPTER 7
The sun had set by the time Rhianyn and Maevyn had assembled some Couriers at the Post and hitched up Chariots ready for departure. Three had already left, headed to deliver news of what had happened that day to the North, South, and East. Maevyn had reserved the West for herself and Rhianyn, being that the Courier was from the Western Horizons and wanted to deliver the good news to her people in person.
She was gazing out the gate into the night sky high above the city as she was finishing getting Coryn and Jezryl hitched up.
âSo, this is⦠night?â Maevyn asked. âItâs darker than I thought. Even our times of dimness with the Aurora werenât as dark as this.â
âIâve seen night skies even darker,â Rhianyn commented, opening the gate a bit wider using the console so that they could take in a more panoramic view.
âItâs really quite beautiful,â Maevyn exclaimed. âBut Iâm concerned about how we can fly in this kind of darkness.â
Rhianyn let out a good-natured laugh. âWell, youâre with the right co-pilot then,â she said. âI have quite a bit of experience with night-flying!â
Maevyn laughed in return and the two of them completed their preparations and got on the chariot. Maevyn was about to give the switch its starting crack when she paused and handed it over to Rhianyn.
âCare to do the honors, co-pilot?â she offered.
Rhianyn accepted it with a smile and gave it a crack off to the side of the chariot. The chariot responded to the signal as expected, and the flames began forming around the wheels. Coryn and Jezryl took off on cue, quickly clearing the gate and then ascending into the night sky, chariot behind them, with Rhianyn laughing in delight and Maevyn just grinning beside her.
***
Lorewyn had discovered over her long existence, both before in Cordysia and now, that knowledge usually came from study and inquiry, whereas wisdom was the result of experience and struggle. A fair amount of knowledge had been gained through a night of study (with Blytheâs help). True wisdom, however, concerning the intricacies of Faedryan politics and procedures was being acquired through the experiences, and struggles, that Lorewyn was having as replacement emissary during the discussion.
No wonder Mother tried to stay out of New Sylestian politics and left all that to Father! She couldnât help thinking.
Lorewyn was sequestered, for lack of a better word, in a chamber suite with three other emissaries and the Scribe. Neither she nor the other three emissaries were permitted to leave during the discussion time. According to the Declarations, the emissaries could discuss for as long as a fortnight, but no more. If there were disagreements on interpretation of the Oracleâs words, those had to be resolved within that time frame. At the end of the fortnight, or sooner if it didnât take that long, the emissaries would deliver their non-canonical statement to the FaeCourt and any others gathered. The emissaries were expected to deliver a unified statement. Disputes within discussion would be resolved by a majority vote among the emissaries present.
