Chapter 16
Perrie
After our encounter with the mermaid we decided to sleep in a house tonight. We hadnât come into contact with any other sign of life today. I think most of the people from the Glass Vault have gone farther off.
All day I couldnât help but worry about Vale. I know heâs going to find me eventually before weâre prepared to try and take him down. I donât think thereâs a way. I feelâ¦lost.
Maisie is already fast asleep beside me, probably dreaming about sunshine and rainbows. She almost wouldnât sleep in the bed, until we found a spare set of sheets in the linen closet. Sheâs so lucky she can think optimistically about everything. Who would have known after all sheâs gone through she could still continue to be strong and positive.
Iâm going to make myself be strong, too. I can no longer be a coward anymore. As I listen to her silent breathing, Iâm flooded with relief that we found each other. If I was still out there on my own, running away from Vale, I donât know if I could have survived.
Then my eyes tear up as I think about Dad. Before, when I was in the Glass Vault, I didnât worry about them so much because Dad, my aunt, and uncle were all safe. Now, they arenât anymore. We were always all together, and now we wonât be. I brush the tears away from my face and try to close my eyes again, but I canât sleep. All I see are green eyes. Eyes I long to gaze in, and eyes I want to run from.
Gently, I push the covers off and get out of bed. I tiptoe quietly out of the room, closing the door softly behind me, so I donât wake Maisie. I head into the living room where Nev is on watch for now. The lantern beside him casts light on his pinkish scars, and I canât help but know theyâre my fault. Iâm the reason he went to the museum that day.
âCanât sleep?â he asks.
I shake my head. âNo. I can take watch. You get some rest.â Itâs better someone gets some sleep while they can.
He lets out a half-hearted laugh. âI donât think I could sleep if I wanted to. Iâm a mess, youâre a mess, the world is a mess.â
âMaisieâs not a mess.â At least ninety-percent not a mess.
âWell, Maisie is special,â Neven says quietly, quickly looking away from me as if he has said something wrong. I know that look on his face.
I walk to where heâs sitting on the couch, grab cheeks in my hands and turn his face to look at me. âYou like her.â
He pulls his face out of my hands, and I sit next to him on the soft cushion. âDonât lie to me, Nev.â
Nev whips his head to mine with his lips pursed tight. âI havenât ever lied to you. I always told you I never lied about anything.â
I jab a finger at his chest. âNo, you didnât lie to me, but you want to now, donât you?â
âIt doesnât matter, anyway.
