Chapter Six: The Talk

Sitting over lunch would have been awkward, since we decided not to discuss anything till later, but everyone had been so hungry that nobody looked up from their plates for even a breath of air. I was reminded about how spoiled the stitches were, when I finished my plate and wanted about five more. Not having a lot of food to dish out around here on a normal day was tough enough, and now that we had even more people to split it amongst, only made things more difficult. After everyone’s plates were cleared and empty, my mother began explaining to the crew where the shower and soap was. I guess we smelled so bad, that she couldn’t wait until after we got up from the table to insist, we shower.

“We have been walking for days in a sewer”, I explained.

My mom’s face grew with shock and concern at my comment.

“In a sewer?”, my dad asked.

“Yep, a sewer”, Beard clarified.

“Hence why I needed a beer”, he added.

My father found Beard’s comment to apparently be quite amusing, because it was one of the few times, I had really seen him laugh, and not in the fake way. My dad apologized to Beard again for the lack of booze and gave him a pat on the back.

“Oh, also my ankle is sticking out of my skin, but it’s all good”, Beard added.

“What!?”, my father asked alarmed, before jumping out of his seat and kneeling on the floor in front of Beard’s chair.

“Let me see, son”, he said.

Beard lifted his pant leg to reveal his horrifying wound to my father.

“Shit! Excuse my language, but that’s not good”, my father exclaimed.

“Yeah, no kidding”, Beard replied mockingly.

“Hold on, I’ll get something that will help for a bit, but we need to find this guy a doctor”, my father explained before running off to grab God knows what.

“I thought you said your mother was a nurse”, Beard said, looking at me a bit muddled.

“Oh that… that was a lie to get that guy off our backs”, I explained.

“Dude! What the hell!”, Beard snapped.

“Calm down, kid, it’s going to be alright”, my dad said while arriving with his first aid kit.

I chuckled to myself, finding it quite amusing that Beard was now being called kid. I would feel bad for him right now, but I was pretty sure this was karma for the way he was acting lately. My mother began to ask more questions as my dad started to attempt at fixing Beard’s ankle.

“Why in a sewer?”, she questioned.

We were supposed to wait until after lunch and cleaning up to talk about everything, but I had a feeling it was about to be discussed now. I guess I had given such an interesting comment that it couldn’t be resisted.

“Oh, and we also, blew up the President and his stupid house”, Beard confidently added to the discussion between agonizing screams.

Both of my parent’s, along with everyone at the table, faces lit up. I don’t think anyone could believe what just came out of Beard’s mouth.
