Chapter Twenty-One
Silver
I can hear the music from miles away. Okay, maybe thatâs an exaggeration, but damn, itâs loud. As Noah pulls up to the house, I see the place crowded with people. A hard swallow makes its way down my throat. Iâve never been to a high school party before, and this one looks epic. Iâve heard of so many horror stories happening at partiesâmaybe it wasnât such a good idea to come? But like Mom said, I need to start acting like a teenager. And that includes going to a party. I donât want to look back at my life when Iâm like forty and regret that I didnât live my teen years to the fullest. Besides, I have Noah with me. I know he wonât let anything happen to me.
He parks the car near the house and looks at me. âYou okay? We donât have to go in if you donât want to.â
I give him a smile. âThanks, but Iâm okay.â
His eyes circle my face for a few seconds. âIs this your first high school party?â
I laugh lightly. âIs it that obvious?â
He shrugs. âI used to go to a lot of parties in my freshman year. My girlfriend liked to party a lot.â
At the mention of a previous girlfriend, I get this weird pang in my chest. Which is ridiculous. Whatâs wrong with me? Iâve been so cut off from guys that I develop feelings for any guy whoâs shown me kindness? I really need to pull myself together.
We get out of the car and make our way into the house, weaving through the throngs of partiers. My anxiety levels start to rise as bodies bump into me to and fro, and itâs a little hard to hear myself think because the music is so loud. But I tell myself to relax. Iâm just a normal teenager going to a party with other normal teenagers. I want to have a good time.
Noah leads me to an area that is somewhat devoid of people, and I breathe a sigh of relief. Iâve been a loner for so long that I should welcome crowds, but damn there are a lot of people here. And the house isnât even that big.
Noah says something to me, but I canât hear over the music. âWhat?â I yell back.
âI asked if you want a drink?â
I swore to myself I would never touch alcohol in my life. Not after witnessing what happened to The Prick. Not after experiencing the effects of his drinking.
âI donât drink,â I say.
âNo, I didnât mean alcohol,â he quickly explains. âI meant a soda.â
âOh. Sure.â
He nods with a smile and disappears to where I assume is the kitchen. Now that Iâm alone, my anxiety levels rise again. But again, I tell myself to relax. I no longer have to live in fear. Cutting myself off from the man who controlled me practically my whole life has led me to a world of freedom and opportunity. And Iâm going to make the most of it.
