The summer was flying by at an alarming speed. The individual days seemed long and tiring, especially the ones between my days off when Aaron and I would sneak back to the city. Those days were magical and wonderful. We could spend hours in bed or wandering around galleries and never have to worry about being caught together, since his mother was safely in residence at the beach house. Those days were far too few and went by entirely too fast. It was as if we had no time together before we had to pretend to ignore each other.

Aaron was ignoring me again. It felt as if he had been ignoring me for days. His mother was monopolizing his time. Of course, that was why she was here, to visit her son. She wasn’t here to watch her son ignore her and have an affair with the chef.

Without him, I couldn’t even get Sierra to go shopping with me at the farmer’s market. She was well pressed under her mother’s thumb, and she complained about it as if she were a teenager and not a fully grown adult. There were times I couldn’t understand why the cow towed to her so much. And then I’d remember that they loved their mother. I loved mine, even when she made me nuts. They didn’t want to distress her any more than I would want to stress my own mother out.

I wasn’t in a position to be demanding of their time. I was the help. The hired chef, a glorified cook.

I sank into a funk. My emotions were so Quixotic these days. The highs were above the clouds, and in seconds I could be at what felt like the lowest of the low. And it didn’t matter how I felt, I still was expected to prepare exquisite meals and delectable desserts.

The menu for this evening featured grilled white fish served with asparagus and a wild rice souffle. I had a fresh Mandalls cheesecake from my last time in the city. That would be served with fresh berries, and as a second option I was making blueberry tarts. The nice thing about the tarts, is they could do double duty for a decadent breakfast if no one selected them for dessert. All I would need to do is add more fruit.

I carefully stirred the crème patisserie for blueberry tarts. My life was nothing but folding ingredients together. Even my dreams were for preparing food that I had no interest in eating. I leaned in to inhale the sweet warm scent and my stomach lurched.

I dropped the spoon and ran for the bathroom. Fortunately, I made it before I lost my lunch. I rinsed out my mouth. The crème patisserie smelled so bad. The thought of it had me retching again.

The smell was even worse when I returned to the kitchen. In my rush, I hadn’t turned off the stove, or removed the pan from the heat. Everything was ruined. I threw the pan in the sink and began opening doors and windows to get the smell out.
