Seventeen

I’m underwater. I try to inhale but can’t, as if my body knows to do so is the ultimate betrayal. I thrash and claw, desperately trying to reach the surface. It never comes. I sink.

“Shhh,” someone whispers to me.

Is it the lady in the water? Has she come back to promise me something else impossible?

“Lie still. You’re safe.”

I know that voice.

I know it like I know the sun in the sky or the glow of the moon. “Charlie?” I ask.

“It’s all right.”

I hear her, but is this real? Am I underwater again?

Drifting away, I can’t tell if I’m drowning. I must be. Maybe I should’ve drowned in the river long ago, the voice never gracing my ears, my body sinking into the deep never to resurface. It’s what I deserve, isn’t it?

Isn’t it?

I don’t know.

I may never know.

And maybe that’s a blessing.

I think it must be.

The cold water takes me, dulling the pain and easing me into oblivion.
