Chapter Eighteen

ARIA, OLYMPIA 1000 YEARS AGO

“Why aren’t you in Olympia anymore?” I asked as we climbed through more dark alleys.

The Shadow King’s castle loomed into view, seemingly emerging from the darkness of the mountainside before us. Its silhouette stood out sharply against the deep night sky, with a slender tower that reached so high it almost seemed to touch the skulls.

There’s a thick protective shadow etching against the castle’s obsidian stone, lending it an eerie presence.

As I gazed at the structure, the windows appeared dark and indistinguishable and the several towers sharp like knives.

“You’re not supposed to ask strangers such things,” Malachtit said, and pouted.

“I ask these things. So?”

Malachtit grinned. “Well, things were never as simple for me up there as for other gods. My only power is healing, and Athena and I... let’s say we didn’t get along very well.”

That piqued my interest. “Why?”

“That, my dear, goes beyond my willingness to reveal my secrets to you.”

I lowered my head, thinking if only he knew I had been imprisoned for months, having seen no men other than Zagrios and my teachers, and that all my conversations revolved around gods, their stories, and legends. His were the most interesting ones in a long time.

I watched as he darted his eyes in my direction, his expression morphing into one of guilt.

“Why don’t you start and tell me your story first?” he said as we ascended a winding path, reaching black brick floors before the castle gates.

Instead of speaking to the guards, Malachtit simply flipped his wrist, and the heavy oak door opened slowly, creaking on its rusty hinges.

“I made a deal with the Shadow King,” I whispered, and Malachtit twitched slightly, almost imperceptibly.

He straightened up immediately, continuing as if nothing had happened.

“Are you crazy?” he whispered back, offering me his arm as we walked through the archway.

I linked mine with his. “Probably.” Comes with being imprisoned.

“What led you to it?”

“You won’t reveal anything about yourself, but I’m supposed to spill everything?”

His lips curled into a smile under his hood.

The entrance hall exuded a touch of mustiness and bygone eras. Along the walls were a dozen of portraits of Hades and Persephone. I blinked at the gorgeous drawings. Hades had long hair and blue eyes, almost like Zagrios, and Persephone was so beautiful…blonde, long curls and a face that resembled an angel. I inhaled deeply and stopped dead in my tracks when I saw a portrait of Zagrios. His beauty was well known, but seeing it on the painting almost took my breath away. He took after his mother. Holy hell.

“You have a crush on him,” Malachtit suddenly said next to me and I jerked. “Is that why you made a deal with him?”

“What?” I snapped my head to him. “No, never.”

I almost choked on the ‘never.’ Well, since our last meeting, I might have thought about him occasionally. Especially at night. But I didn’t even know him, and finding someone good-looking didn’t equate to developing feelings.

“You’ve got drool there.“ Malachit laughed, pretending to wipe something off my lip.
