Chapter Thirteen

Stone balled his hands into fists. He’d heard similar stories before, but they enraged him every time. His father had taught him to respect women. To protect them. “What happened after that? Did Hubert ever come back?”

“I never saw him,” Angie said. “And my father and I never spoke of it again.”

Stone’s breath eased out. “Where is your father now? We’d like to talk to him.”

“That’s impossible,” Angie said. “He died ten years ago.”

“Angie,” Macy said. “Do you think your father would have made good on that threat?”

The woman wiped her hands on her jeans. “I don’t know. Why? Are you trying to say he killed that vile man who attacked me?”

“I don’t know what to think.” Macy softened her tone. “What about the man you married?”

“What about him?” Angie’s voice turned defensive.

“Did he ever talk to Hubert?” Stone asked.

“You’re not pinning that vile man’s death on my daddy or on my sweet husband.” Angie stood. “I’ve said too much already. I have to get back to work.”

Her posture rigid, she gestured for them to leave her office.

Macy pushed a card into her hand. “If you think of something else, please call me.”

Angie stuffed the card into her pocket and gave Macy a dark look.

Stone followed Angie back through the gardening shop. He and Macy waited until they’d settled in his car before he spoke.

“Interesting story. If Angie’s father or husband had anything to do with Hubert’s death, she obviously doesn’t intend to tell us.”

“No, she’s protective of them.” Macy buckled her seat belt. “Considering what happened, I can’t say as I blame her. After all this time, with both men deceased, it’ll be hard to prove their involvement.”

“And if one of them murdered Hubert, how did he end up in your house?”

“Good question.”

Stone’s mind raced. “Do you remember if your mother ever went to that gardening center? Maybe she had a delivery or gardener come out to tend the yard?”

Macy pinched the bridge of her nose as if struggling to recall. “I don’t remember her gardening as I got older, but she may have when I was young. When I was looking at old pictures, there was a flower garden out front. But she must have let it all die later on after her break. And she never hired anyone to help. We didn’t have the money.” She angled her head to look at Stone. “What are you thinking?”

“Just looking at every possibility,” Stone said. “Both Angie’s father and her husband had reason to hate Hubert.”

“True, but they work in the gardening business,” Macy said. “Why wouldn’t they have just buried him somewhere? That would have been easier than putting him in a wall where he might be found.”

Stone considered that. “That makes sense.” Only it put them back to square one.
